ULTA Gel Eyeliner Pencil Review and Swatches (Black Out and Envy)
House brands usually aren’t good, and Ulta’s is no exception. But they run such great sales on their products, and when I saw their Gel Eyeliner Pencils were BOGO free, I couldn’t help myself.
(Please excuse the weird dust clinging to the pencil. :|)
If you’re familiar with Urban Decay 24/7 liners, you know the deal. ULTA Gel Eyeliner Pencils ($8 for 0.04 oz) are pretty much the same in concept. They come in six shades, including some fun colors like teal and royal purple. ULTA describes them as a “super creamy gel eye liner formula providing effortless smooth application and lasting pigmented coverage.” I picked up the shades Black Out (matte black) and Envy (blackened forest green).
I admit, I actually like these. The formula is smooth and creamy and doesn’t drag at all. It takes a few minutes to set, after which it’s difficult to smudge. The color intensity isn’t the best, but I find that few eyeliner formulas have the punchy, one-stroke opacity of my beloved Prestige Total Intensity pencils. ULTA’s is about on par with many of Urban Decay’s pencils, in fact.
Unfortunately, these — like every other eyeliner I’ve tried failed to last on my lower lashline. (The curse of hooded Asian eyes.) They do all right on my upper lashline, though, even without a layer of primer. There is some melting in my inner corner but I’m pretty sure that has more to do with my eye shape than the liner formula. ULTA never claims it’s waterproof anyway, so it’s hard for me to fault them.
So far, my favorite use for these is using Envy as a base for Urban Decay Loaded eyeshadow. It’s become one of my favorite “quick” looks: all I have to do is draw a thick line on my bare lid with Envy, blend it out a bit, and sweep some Loaded over the top.
ULTA Gel Eyeliners are another good cheap alternative to look at when UD 24/7 is out of your budget. The color selection is decent and the formula has a smooth, creamy glide. Unfortunately, they too failed to endure the watery torment of my lower lash line. However, for the price I’m willing to deal.
- Smooth, creamy formula with no tugging.
- Color selection includes some brights.
- Frequently goes on sale for 50% off or similar.
- The packaging is easy to sharpen and doesn’t feel cheap.
- Ulta retail stores are rare, so unless you’re lucky enough to live near one, you’ll have to stick to ordering online.
- Did not last on my lower lash line.
- None that I can think of!
Would I buy again? Yes.
